KGen-X was an aborted rewrite of KGen that was never released to the public. This was a DOS-based emulator and ran on 486 or better hardware, but required at least a Pentium to run at full speed. Another emulator called Genecyst was released around the same time by Bloodlust Software and a healthy rivalry began. This was the first time that the YM2612 chip was successfully emulated, contrary to other efforts that tried to approximate the sound and music of Genesis using the then popular OP元 chips on compatible Adlib and Sound Blaster cards. Under Win2k/WinXP it will attempt to use IOCTL instead, but should you encounter problems with this you can edit the INI file value for 'ForceASPI' to 1, and install ASPI anyway.KGen was Steve Snake's first attempt at creating a Mega Drive emulator, written because at the time the only emulator available, Genem, was slow and had poor sound quality. Under Win9x/WinME, it requires an ASPI manager in order to access CD-ROM drives.

Note however that this mode is no longer supported, is somewhat slower, has less features, and requires the desktop to be in 16-Bit (HI-COLOR) Mode. You could also try settings of either 0 or 1 for 'CompatibleGFXOpt' to see which works fastest on your hardware. This will kick in automatically if needed, but can be forced by editing the INI file value for 'ForceCompatibleGFX' to 1 should your performance suffer. A modern graphics card is recommended, however a fallback compatibility mode is included if you have an older card, or experience speed issues or other problems.
